How it works

1. Enter the two birthdays

Type each date of birth in YYYY-MM-DD format. Add optional names like "Alex" and "Sam" to keep results clear — especially useful for siblings or couples.

2. Choose your "as of" date

By default we use today, but you can set any date. This lets you calculate the gap as it was on a wedding day, school cutoff, or a future birthday.

3. We do two types of math

  • Calendar difference: We subtract years, then months, then days, borrowing days from the previous month when needed. This is why February, 30-day months, and leap years (like Feb 29) are handled correctly.
  • Absolute difference: We convert both dates to UTC midnight and count exact days, then derive weeks, decimal months (average 30.436875 days), decimal years (365.2425 days), hours, minutes, and seconds.

Calendar gap respects the human calendar (years/months/days). Total days is the absolute count. That's why 11 months 30 days is not rounded to 1 year — it's accurate until the next monthly anniversary passes.
