Built for musicians, podcast editors, archivists, DJs, and anyone who needs to check MP3 tags or view audio file metadata before publishing.
What you can view
- Common tags: title, artist, album, albumArtist, year, track / track total, disc / disc total, genre (with ID3v1 numeric
(4)-> Disco decoding), composer, publisher, copyright, BPM, key, comment, lyrics - Raw tags: every frame/atom exactly as stored - TIT2, TPE1, TALB, TCON, APIC, COMM, ©nam, ©ART, trkn, covr, TITLE=, ARTIST=, INAM, IART and more
- Cover art: APIC / PIC for MP3, covr for M4A, METADATA_BLOCK_PICTURE for FLAC/OGG with mime, picture type, size, and one-click download
- Technical info: format, container, codec (MP3, AAC, FLAC, PCM, Vorbis, Opus), duration from STREAMINFO / mvhd / Ogg granule / data chunk or Xing VBR header, bitrate (CBR + VBR average), sample rate, channels, channel mode, bit depth, lossless flag
Supported formats
MP3 with ID3v2.2, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4 plus ID3v1 and ID3v1.1, FLAC, M4A / MP4 / AAC, WAV (PCM, IEEE Float, with LIST INFO and embedded id3 chunk), OGG Vorbis, OGA, Opus. If a file has no tags, you still get technical properties and a clear warning.
Why this is different
Most online mp3 metadata viewers upload your file to a server, only show ID3v2, hide technical data, and strip cover art. This tool runs 100% client-side in your browser using pure ArrayBuffer parsing. No upload, no tracking, no limits. It handles mixed tag versions, detects ID3v1 vs ID3v2 conflicts, decodes Windows-1252, UTF-8, UTF-16 with BOM, and shows you both the clean unified view and the raw hex-level truth.
Use it to audit your library, fix missing tags before distribution, compare masters, verify podcast loudness metadata, or answer the classic question: do WAV files have metadata? Yes - and this viewer proves it.
How it works
Everything happens locally in your browser. No file ever leaves your device.
1. Drop files
Drag and drop one or many audio files into the dropzone. The tool accepts audio/* plus .mp3, .flac, .wav, .m4a, .mp4, .ogg, .oga, .opus, .aiff, .wma. For each file we create an object URL for playback and read the ArrayBuffer.
2. Detect the container
We inspect magic bytes, not just the extension:
ID3at offset 0 -> MP3 with ID3v2fLaC-> FLACOggS-> OGG Vorbis / OpusRIFF....WAVE-> WAV....ftyp-> M4A / MP4
If detection fails, we fall back to extension guessing and still try ID3 parsers.
3. Parse tags by format
MP3 - ID3v2: Read 10-byte header, synchsafe size, flags for unsynchronisation, extended header, footer. De-unsync FF 00 -> FF if needed. Parse frames: v2.2 = 3-char ID + 3-byte size, v2.3/v2.4 = 4-char ID + 4-byte size + flags. Decode text frames with encoding byte 0=ISO-8859-1/Windows-1252, 1=UTF-16 with BOM, 2=UTF-16BE, 3=UTF-8. Handle TXXX user text, COMM comments, USLT lyrics, APIC/PIC pictures, and URL frames.
MP3 - Technical: Scan for frame sync FFE, parse MPEG version, layer, bitrate index, sample rate index, channel mode. If Xing/Info header is present, read total frames to compute exact VBR duration and average bitrate.
MP3 - ID3v1: Check last 128 bytes for TAG. Read 30-byte title/artist/album, 4-byte year, 28-byte comment + track byte for ID3v1.1, 1-byte genre index -> lookup 192-genre list.
FLAC: Parse STREAMINFO for sample rate (20-bit), channels (3-bit), bit depth (5-bit), total samples (36-bit) -> duration. Parse VORBIS_COMMENT block: vendor string + KEY=VALUE comments. Map TITLE=, ARTIST= etc to common tags. Parse PICTURE blocks and base64 METADATA_BLOCK_PICTURE into cover art.
OGG / Opus: Find Vorbis identification 01 vorbis for channels/sample rate, OpusHead for Opus. Locate comment packet 03 vorbis or OpusTags, decode little-endian lengths. For duration, scan backwards up to 64KB for last OggS page and read its 64-bit granule position / sampleRate.
M4A / MP4: Walk box tree by size+type. Read mvhd timescale/duration -> duration. Read mp4a audio sample entry for channels/sample rate. Inside meta > ilst, parse atoms like ©nam, ©ART, trkn, disk, covr. Each data box has type and payload. covr with type 13=JPEG, 14=PNG becomes a picture.
WAV: Parse RIFF chunks: fmt gives audioFormat, channels, sampleRate, byteRate, bitsPerSample. data size / byteRate = duration. LIST INFO with sub-chunks INAM=IART=IPRD etc. If id3 chunk exists, run ID3v2 parser inside it. Also read bext.
4. Unify and validate
We merge into common tags with priority ID3v2 > MP4/Vorbis/WAV > ID3v1. We keep all raw tags for debugging, collect pictures, deduplicate ID3 versions, and add warnings for no tags, format guessed from extension, or ID3v1 title differing from ID3v2 title.
5. View, search, compare, export
Switch between Overview (stats + common tags), Technical (full dump), Raw Tags (search + source filter), and Pictures (gallery with download). When you drop multiple files, a batch compare table shows every common key side-by-side. Export clean JSON or CSV, copy any value, and play the original audio with the native <audio> element using the local blob URL.

What is an audio metadata viewer and what does it show?
What is an audio metadata viewer and what does it show?
An audio metadata viewer reads the hidden information inside your audio files. It shows ID3 tags like title, artist, album, year, genre, track number, comments, lyrics, plus embedded cover art and technical info such as duration, bitrate, sample rate, channels, bit depth, codec, and whether the file is lossless. This tool does it entirely in your browser for MP3, FLAC, M4A, WAV, OGG, and Opus.
Which audio formats are supported for metadata viewing?
Which audio formats are supported for metadata viewing?
MP3 with ID3v2.2, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4 and ID3v1 / ID3v1.1, FLAC with Vorbis comments and FLAC PICTURE blocks, M4A / MP4 / AAC with iTunes ilst atoms including covr, WAV with LIST INFO and embedded ID3, OGG Vorbis, OGA, and Opus with OpusTags. Even if a format is uncommon, technical properties like duration and sample rate are still extracted when possible.
Do WAV files have metadata?
Do WAV files have metadata?
Yes. WAV files can store metadata in a LIST chunk with INFO sub-chunks like INAM (title), IART (artist), IPRD (album), ICRD (year), IGNR (genre), ICMT (comment), and even an embedded id3 chunk with full ID3v2 tags. Many apps ignore it, which is why people think WAV has no metadata. This viewer parses LIST INFO, bext, and id3 chunks so you can actually see it.
How to add metadata to WAV files?
How to add metadata to WAV files?
WAV INFO is limited. To add proper metadata, use a dedicated audio tag editor: 1) For broad compatibility, write LIST INFO fields (INAM, IART, IPRD) and also write an id3 chunk so modern players read it. 2) For long-term archiving, convert to FLAC or BWF (Broadcast WAV) which has a bext chunk for description, or keep a sidecar JSON. This viewer is read-only so you can verify what was written - drop the edited WAV and check the Raw Tags tab for INFO and ID3 sources.
Is my audio file uploaded to a server?
Is my audio file uploaded to a server?
No. All parsing uses ArrayBuffer, DataView, and TextDecoder directly in your browser. The file never leaves your device, there is no upload, no server log, and no file size limit except your browser memory. You can disconnect from the internet after loading the page and it will still work.
Why does my file show no metadata tags found?
Why does my file show no metadata tags found?
The file is likely untagged, uses an unsupported tag location, or only has file-system metadata that is not embedded. Some DAWs write metadata only to their project file. Some WAV recorders write only bext. Try checking Raw Tags with no filter, and check Technical to confirm the format. If you expected ID3 tags on an MP3, ensure the exporter was set to write ID3v2.3.
What is the difference between ID3v1 and ID3v2?
What is the difference between ID3v1 and ID3v2?
ID3v1 is 128 bytes at the end of an MP3 file with fixed 30-character fields and 1-byte genre. ID3v1.1 adds a track number. ID3v2 is at the start, variable length, supports Unicode (UTF-8 / UTF-16), long values, TXXX custom fields, COMM comments, USLT lyrics, APIC cover art, and many more frames. This tool shows both versions and warns if ID3v1 title differs from ID3v2 title.
Can I view and download cover art?
Can I view and download cover art?
Yes. MP3 APIC/PIC frames, M4A covr atoms, and FLAC/OGG METADATA_BLOCK_PICTURE are decoded to data URLs. You see picture type like Cover front, mime like image/jpeg, size, and description. Use the Download button to save as JPG/PNG/WebP with the correct extension. You can also copy the data URL.
Can I edit tags or add metadata in this tool?
Can I edit tags or add metadata in this tool?
This tool is intentionally read-only to keep it private and safe. It focuses on accurate viewing, conflict detection, and export. To edit, use a dedicated tag editor like Mp3tag, Kid3, Picard, or Yate, then re-drop the file here to verify. You can export JSON or CSV to audit your library before batch editing.
How do I compare metadata across multiple audio files?
How do I compare metadata across multiple audio files?
Drop multiple files at once. Select any file to view in detail, then scroll to Batch Compare. It builds a table of every common key like title, artist, album, year, genre, track, disc, plus duration and format side-by-side, so you can spot missing or inconsistent tags before release.
How accurate are duration and bitrate?
How accurate are duration and bitrate?
Very accurate when the container provides it: FLAC STREAMINFO total samples / sample rate, MP4 mvhd timescale, OGG last granule, WAV data chunk / byteRate. For MP3 CBR we estimate from file size and first frame bitrate. For VBR we read Xing/Info header with total frames and total bytes for exact duration and average bitrate. If no header exists, we show estimated bitrate and flag it in warnings.
