What is the Business Days Calculator?
The Business Days Calculator is a free online tool that instantly tells you how many working days lie between any two dates—or what date you land on after adding or subtracting business days. It goes beyond simple weekday counting by letting you fully control which days are considered non‑working.
Instead of counting manually on a calendar, you can:
- Switch between Saturday/Sunday weekends, any custom set of days (e.g., Friday‑Saturday), or even a single day.
- Add your own list of custom holidays – company closures, personal leave, public holidays not already covered.
- Choose whether to include the start and end dates in your range.
- See a detailed breakdown of total calendar days, business days, weekends excluded, and holidays excluded.
- Perform forward or backward date arithmetic (add / subtract business days) and get a step‑by‑step summary of what was skipped.
The results update the moment you change any input, so there’s no button to press – just adjust your dates, weekends, or holidays and the answer appears. A one‑click copy button lets you grab the final date right into your clipboard.
Whether you’re planning a project deadline, calculating holiday pay, or figuring out shipping estimates, this calculator gives you precise results with complete transparency.
How it works
This tool has three core modes, reachable from the top buttons. Each mode works in real‑time – your results update instantly.
1. Pick a Mode
- Between Dates – Count the number of business days within a fixed date range.
- Add Days – Move forward from a start date by a certain number of business days.
- Subtract Days – Move backward from a start date.
2. Enter Your Dates
- Between Dates: select a Start Date and an End Date. Use the checkboxes Include start date / Include end date to decide whether the boundary days should be counted.
- Add / Subtract Days: choose a Start Date and enter a whole number of business days to add or subtract. You can use negative numbers? No – the dedicated Subtract mode handles that more clearly.
3. Customize Non‑Working Days
The weekend and holiday settings apply to every calculation.
Weekend Days
By default, Saturday and Sunday are considered weekends. Uncheck any box to remove a day from the weekend set, or check additional days (e.g., Friday + Saturday). The calculator treats all checked days as non‑working weekends.
Custom Holidays
Click the + Add Holiday button to insert a date picker. Choose any date you want to treat as an extra non‑working day.
- Holidays that fall on a weekend are not double‑counted – they are automatically included in the weekend count.
- You can add as many holidays as you need. Remove any entry with the ✕ button.
4. Interpret the Results
Between Dates
You’ll see four key numbers:
| Stat | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Business Days | The pure working days (neither weekend nor holiday) in your range |
| Total Calendar Days | The full span, including all weekends and holidays |
| Weekends Excluded | Number of weekend days that were skipped |
| Holidays Excluded | Number of custom holidays that fell on a weekday and were skipped |
Add / Subtract Days
The main result is the Result Date (readable format and a copy button). Below it, you get a breakdown:
- Calendar Days Moved – how many actual days were traversed forward/backward.
- Weekends Skipped – weekends encountered during the traversal.
- Holidays Skipped – custom holidays (on weekdays) encountered.
This way you can see exactly why you landed on that date.

Frequently asked questions
What is a business day?
What is a business day?
A business day is traditionally a weekday – Monday through Friday – that is not a public holiday or other non‑working day. This calculator lets you define your own non‑working days (any combination of weekdays as "weekend" and any date as a custom holiday) to match your region, company, or project calendar.
How do you calculate business days between two dates?
How do you calculate business days between two dates?
Select the Between Dates mode, pick your start and end dates, and the tool instantly counts the days that are neither weekends nor custom holidays. You can also choose whether to include the start date and end date in the total. The result shows the exact number of business days, plus a breakdown of what was excluded.
Can I exclude specific holidays?
Can I exclude specific holidays?
Yes – use the Custom Holidays section. Click + Add Holiday and pick any date. That day will be treated as a non‑working day, even if it falls on a weekday. You can add as many as you need, and remove them individually. Holidays that happen to land on a weekend are counted as weekend days, not as additional holiday exclusions.
How do I add or subtract business days from a date?
How do I add or subtract business days from a date?
Switch to the Add Days or Subtract Days mode. Enter your start date and the number of business days you want to move. The tool will skip weekends and custom holidays as it steps forward or backward, showing you the final date and a summary of all the days it skipped along the way.
Does the calculator automatically skip weekends?
Does the calculator automatically skip weekends?
Yes. By default, Saturday and Sunday are treated as weekends and are excluded from business day counts. You can change this in the Weekend days checkboxes – for example, uncheck Sunday if your workweek includes Sundays, or add Friday if you follow a Friday‑Saturday weekend.
What happens if my date range is reversed (end before start)?
What happens if my date range is reversed (end before start)?
The tool checks that the start date is not after the end date. If it is, you’ll see an error message and no result will be shown until you correct the order.
Can I include the start or end date in the count?
Can I include the start or end date in the count?
Yes. The checkboxes Include start date and Include end date let you decide whether the boundary dates are part of the range. By default, both are included. Unchecking one excludes that date from the total (for example, to count only the full working days between two dates).
Is the Business Days Calculator free to use?

What’s the difference between calendar days and business days?
What’s the difference between calendar days and business days?
Calendar days are all days in a date range (including weekends and holidays). Business days are only the days you consider working days – weekdays that are not holidays, based on your weekend and custom holiday settings. The calculator shows both numbers so you can see the full picture.
Why does the “holidays excluded” number sometimes seem lower than expected?
Why does the “holidays excluded” number sometimes seem lower than expected?
When a custom holiday falls on a day that is already a weekend, it is counted once in the Weekends Excluded total and not in Holidays Excluded. The tool avoids double‑counting to give you an accurate breakdown.
Can I use this tool for project planning or payroll calculations?
Can I use this tool for project planning or payroll calculations?
Certainly. Many people use it to calculate working days for project timelines, leave balances, payroll periods, shipping estimates, and contract deadlines. The flexibility of custom weekends and holidays makes it suitable for any industry or regional calendar.
