How it works
The calculator follows a multi-step pipeline based on peer-reviewed exercise science:
- Stride Length: If you provide a custom stride, it is used directly. Otherwise, the tool estimates stride as
height (cm) × 0.414for walking orheight × 0.65for running. A default of 72 cm applies when height is omitted. - Distance:
Distance (meters) = steps × stride (cm) / 100. This converts to kilometers and miles for display. - Time:
Time (hours) = distance (km) / speed (km/h). Each activity profile carries a standard speed (slow walk at 3.2 km/h, moderate at 4.8 km/h, brisk at 6.4 km/h, running at 9.7 km/h). - Calorie Burn: Using the ACSM metabolic equation,
calories/min = (MET × 3.5 × weight_kg) / 200. The MET value is 2.8 for slow walking, 3.5 for moderate, 4.3 for brisk, and 9.8 for running. Total calories equal calories per minute multiplied by total minutes. - Custom Mode: You can override both MET and speed to model hiking, incline walking, cycling cross-training, or any specialized movement.
- Comparison: The same inputs are recomputed for every preset activity so you can see how pace and intensity change total burn without changing step count.
