What is the Tip Calculator & Bill Splitter?
Calculating the right tip and splitting the bill shouldn't ruin the end of a great meal. Our free, online Tip Calculator and Bill Splitter takes the mental gymnastics out of dining out.
Whether you need a quick gratuity calculation for your barista, an even split for a pizza night with friends, or a complex itemized breakdown where everyone pays exactly for what they ordered, this tool handles it all.
Many standard calculators lack the nuances of real-world tipping. That's why this calculator includes advanced—but easy-to-use—features:
- Pre-tax vs. Post-tax Tipping: Choose whether to calculate your tip on the food total alone or the post-tax final bill.
- Smart Rounding: Instantly round up or down to the nearest whole dollar for clean, easy-to-read totals.
- Proportional Itemized Splitting: Forget manual math when one friend orders a salad and another orders a steak; the calculator distributes the tax and tip fairly based on individual subtotals.
- Shareable Summaries: Generate a clean, copy-paste text breakdown perfect for sending Venmo or CashApp requests to the group.
No downloads, no sign-up, and 100% free to use. Just enter your bill details and get instant, perfectly accurate numbers.
How it works
Using the Tip Calculator is fast and intuitive. It offers two main modes: Split Evenly for shared meals, and Itemized Split for when everyone pays their own way.
For a Simple or Even Split:
- Enter the Bill Amount: Type in the total amount shown on your receipt. You can also input the exact tax amount if you want to calculate your tip pre-tax.
- Select Your Tip: Choose one of the quick-select preset percentages (15%, 18%, 20%, etc.) or enter a custom amount.
- Choose the Number of People: If you are paying solo, leave it at 1. Otherwise, enter the group size to see how much each person owes.
- Adjust Advanced Options (Optional): Toggle "Tip on Pre-Tax Subtotal" if you don't want to tip on the government tax. You can also use the Rounding Mode to round the total bill or the per-person shares to flat, whole dollar amounts.
For an Itemized Split:
- Switch Modes: Click the "Itemized Split" button at the top of the tool.
- Add Your Group: Enter the names of the people in your party.
- Enter Subtotals: Type in exactly how much each person's specific food and drinks cost. The tool will automatically calculate the total bill for you.
- Input Tax and Tip: Enter the receipt's tax amount and choose your desired tip percentage.
- View the Breakdown: The calculator will proportionally distribute the tax and tip based on who spent what, so the person who bought the steak pays a slightly higher share of the tip than the person who bought a side salad.
Once your calculations are done, simply click Copy Shareable Summary to grab a perfectly formatted text message you can drop into your group chat.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
This is entirely up to personal preference, but proper etiquette generally states that you only need to tip on the pre-tax subtotal (the actual cost of the food and drinks). Tipping on the post-tax amount means you are essentially "tipping on the tax." Our calculator gives you a simple checkbox to easily choose whichever method you prefer.
How does the Itemized Split feature work?
How does the Itemized Split feature work?
Instead of dividing a 30 of food and Person B ordered $60, the calculator ensures Person B pays twice as much of the shared tax and tip amounts as Person A. It keeps things mathematically fair.
