Upside Down Text

Upside-down text relies on a clever trick: instead of rotating pixels or rendering images, it substitutes each normal character with a visually similar upside-down Unicode character, then reverses the entire string so the text reads correctly when your device is flipped.

Step 1 — Character Mapping

The tool maintains a lookup table that maps every common Latin letter, digit, and punctuation mark to its upside-down Unicode equivalent. For example:

Notice the symmetry: b becomes q and q becomes b; n becomes u and u becomes n; 6 becomes 9 and 9 becomes 6. Characters that look the same when flipped — like o, l, s, x, z, 0, and 8 — map to themselves.

Characters without a good upside-down equivalent (such as most emoji or non-Latin scripts) are passed through unchanged.

Step 2 — String Reversal

Flipping characters alone isn't enough. When you turn a page upside down, you also read it right-to-left. So after substituting each character, the tool reverses the entire string. The combination of character flipping + string reversal produces text that reads correctly when your screen is rotated 180°.

For example:

Input:     Hello
Flipped:   Hǝllo
Reversed:  ollǝH  ← reads "Hello" when flipped upside down

Step 3 — Decode (Reverse the Process)

To decode upside-down text back to normal, the tool simply reverses these steps:

1. Reverse the string (undoing the original reversal)
2. Map each upside-down character back to its normal form

This makes the tool fully round-trippable: encode a message, send it, and the recipient can decode it back to the original text.

Unicode — Not a Font

It's important to understand that upside-down text is not a font. Fonts change how characters look but use the same underlying character codes. Upside-down text uses entirely different Unicode code points — for example, ɐ is U+0250 (Latin Small Letter Turned A), not a styled version of a.

This means:

• The text works on any platform that supports Unicode (virtually all modern devices)
• It can be copied and pasted without losing its appearance
• It does not require any special fonts to be installed
• It is indexed as the upside-down characters, not as the original letters

The Four Modes Explained

Upside Down (default)

The full transformation: flip + reverse. The output reads correctly when your device is rotated 180°. This is what most people want.

Flipped

Flip only, no reversal. Each character is individually upside down, but the reading order stays left-to-right. Useful when you want flipped characters without the reversed reading direction.

Mirror

Reverse only, no flip. The text reads right-to-left with normal characters — classic mirror writing, like Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks.

Decode

Reverse the full transformation. Paste upside-down text and the tool reverses it and maps characters back to their originals, recovering the plain text.
