What is the M3U8 Viewer Online – Inspect HLS Playlists?
Open any M3U8 file and see what is inside it in seconds. This free M3U8 viewer reads HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) playlists and turns the raw text into clear tables: quality levels, audio and subtitle tracks, media segments, durations, encryption, and every URL the playlist points to.
Paste a playlist, drop a .m3u8 file onto the page, or load a built-in sample. The result appears instantly, with no upload and no account.
What you can inspect
- Master playlists: every variant stream with its resolution, bandwidth, average bandwidth, frame rate, and decoded codecs, plus audio, subtitle, and I-frame renditions.
- Media playlists: every segment with its sequence number, start time, duration, URI, title, and byte range.
- Playlist details: VOD, live, or event type, target duration, media sequence, HLS version, total duration, and shortest and longest segments.
- Encryption and init data:
#EXT-X-KEYmethods and key URIs, fMP4#EXT-X-MAPinit sections, and#EXT-X-DATERANGEentries. - Ads and custom tags: discontinuities, gaps, program date-times, and unrecognised tags such as ad cue markers, attached to the segment they affect.
- Problems: warnings for missing required tags, segments that exceed the target duration, and features that need a higher HLS version.
Built for debugging and everyday checks
Streaming engineers, QA testers, and developers use an M3U8 viewer to answer questions fast. Which bitrates does this stream offer? Why does playback stall at one segment? Are the segment paths relative or absolute? Is the stream encrypted? You get the answer without reading hundreds of lines by hand.
You can also extract all URLs from a playlist, filter segments by text, and export the result as JSON, a segments CSV, or a plain URL list.
Private by design
Everything runs in your browser. Your playlist is never uploaded, stored, or sent to a server, so it is safe to inspect internal or unreleased streams.
How it works
An M3U8 file is a plain-text UTF-8 playlist used by HLS. The viewer reads it line by line, recognises the tags defined in the HLS specification, and organises the result into tables you can search and export. All parsing happens locally in your browser.
Step by step
- Add your playlist. Paste the text into the editor, drop a
.m3u8or.m3ufile onto the upload area, or load the master or media sample. - Optional: enter a base URL. If your playlist uses relative paths, type the full address of the playlist file (for example
https://cdn.example.com/video/master.m3u8). The viewer then resolves every path into a complete link. - Read the overview. The tool detects whether the file is a master or media playlist and shows the key numbers at a glance.
- Explore the tabs. Switch between variants, renditions, segments, tags and keys, URLs, and the parsed JSON.
- Export what you need. Download JSON, a segments CSV, or a list of URLs, or copy the URLs to your clipboard.
Master playlists and media playlists
| Type | What it lists | What the viewer shows |
|---|---|---|
| Master (multivariant) | Links to other playlists, one per quality level, plus audio and subtitle tracks | Variants table, renditions table, bandwidth range, resolutions, codecs |
| Media | The actual media segments in playback order | Segments table, durations, discontinuities, encryption, init sections, duration chart |
The viewer chooses the type automatically. A file that contains #EXT-X-STREAM-INF or #EXT-X-MEDIA tags is treated as a master playlist. Anything else is treated as a media playlist.
How values are calculated
- Segment start time: the sum of all earlier
#EXTINFdurations. The first segment starts at 0. - Total duration: the sum of every segment duration.
- Media sequence: the
#EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCEvalue plus the segment's position, so live window numbering matches what a player sees. - Byte ranges: when
#EXT-X-BYTERANGEomits an offset, it continues from the end of the previous range of the same file. - Codecs: strings such as
avc1.64001fare decoded into readable labels like H.264 High L3.1. - Full URLs: relative paths are resolved against your base URL using standard URL rules.
Validation
The viewer checks the first line is #EXTM3U, then reports issues such as a missing #EXT-X-TARGETDURATION, a VOD playlist without #EXT-X-ENDLIST, segment URIs with no #EXTINF, keys with no URI, and features used with too low an #EXT-X-VERSION. Warnings do not stop the parse, so you still see everything that can be read.
Why it does not fetch URLs
The tool makes no network requests. Fetching a playlist from another site would be blocked by browser cross-origin rules on most servers, and it would reveal your stream address to a third party. To inspect a live stream, open the playlist link in your browser, copy the text, and paste it here.

What is an M3U8 viewer?
What is an M3U8 viewer?
An M3U8 viewer is a tool that opens an M3U8 playlist and presents its contents in a readable form. Instead of scrolling through raw tags, you see the available quality levels, the list of media segments, their durations, and the URLs the playlist references.
What is an M3U8 file?
What is an M3U8 file?
An M3U8 file is a UTF-8 encoded playlist used by HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). It does not contain video itself. It lists where a player can download the video, audio, and subtitle pieces, and in what order to play them.
How do I open an M3U8 file online?
How do I open an M3U8 file online?
Paste the playlist text into the editor or drop the .m3u8 file onto the upload area. The playlist is parsed immediately in your browser. You can also load one of the built-in samples to see how the tool works.
Can this tool play the video in an M3U8 file?
Can this tool play the video in an M3U8 file?
No. This tool inspects the playlist, not the stream. It shows what the playlist contains so you can understand, debug, and document it. To watch the video you need an HLS-capable player.
Can I paste an M3U8 link instead of the file contents?
Can I paste an M3U8 link instead of the file contents?
The viewer does not download links, because browsers block most cross-origin requests and fetching would expose your stream address to another server. Open the link in a new tab, copy the text, and paste it here. Then enter the link as the base URL so relative paths resolve correctly.
What is the difference between a master playlist and a media playlist?
What is the difference between a master playlist and a media playlist?
A master playlist lists the different versions of a stream, such as 360p, 720p, and 1080p, along with audio and subtitle tracks. A media playlist lists the individual segments for one version. The viewer detects which type you opened and shows the matching tables.
How do I see all the segments and their durations?
How do I see all the segments and their durations?
Open a media playlist and choose the Segments tab. Each row shows the segment number, media sequence, start time, duration, and URI. The Overview tab shows the total duration and a chart of every segment length.
How do I get full segment URLs from a playlist with relative paths?
How do I get full segment URLs from a playlist with relative paths?
Enter the full address of the playlist in the Base URL field. The viewer resolves every relative segment, variant, key, and init-section path into a complete URL. Turn on the full URL option, then copy or download the list from the URLs tab.
Can I extract all URLs from an M3U8 file?
Can I extract all URLs from an M3U8 file?
Yes. The URLs tab lists every distinct URL in the playlist and lets you filter by type, such as segments, variants, keys, or renditions. You can copy the list or download it as a text file.
Can I export M3U8 data to CSV or JSON?
Can I export M3U8 data to CSV or JSON?
Yes. You can download the full parsed playlist as JSON. For media playlists you can also download a CSV of all segments with their index, start time, duration, URI, and encryption details, ready to open in a spreadsheet.
How can I tell if an M3U8 stream is encrypted?
How can I tell if an M3U8 stream is encrypted?
Check the Overview tab for the encryption badge and the Tags & keys tab for the key details. Encrypted streams use an #EXT-X-KEY tag, most commonly with METHOD=AES-128 or SAMPLE-AES. The tool shows the method and key URI, never the key itself.
What do the codec strings in a master playlist mean?
What do the codec strings in a master playlist mean?
Codec strings follow RFC 6381. For example, avc1.64001f means H.264 High profile at level 3.1, and mp4a.40.2 means AAC-LC audio. The viewer decodes common codecs into readable names and keeps the original string visible on hover.
What do the warnings mean?
What do the warnings mean?
Warnings point to places where the playlist breaks the HLS specification, such as a missing target duration, a segment longer than the declared target, or a VOD playlist without an end tag. They do not block parsing, but they can cause problems in some players.
Why does the viewer say my file is not a valid playlist?
Why does the viewer say my file is not a valid playlist?
Every HLS playlist must start with #EXTM3U on the first line. If the first line is different, the tool reports an error. This often happens when an HTML error page or a JSON response was copied by mistake, so check that you copied the real playlist text.
Does it support live streams and low-latency HLS?
Does it support live streams and low-latency HLS?
Yes, for any playlist text you paste. Live and event playlists are labelled as such, and low-latency tags such as part information and server control are recognised. Because the tool does not fetch updates, paste a fresh copy to see the latest window.
Does it work with M3U IPTV playlists?
Does it work with M3U IPTV playlists?
It reads .m3u files that use standard HLS tags. Plain IPTV channel lists with #EXTINF lines and stream addresses open as a list of entries, but IPTV-specific attributes are shown as custom tags rather than interpreted.
Is my playlist uploaded to a server?
Is my playlist uploaded to a server?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser. Your playlist, files, and base URL are never sent anywhere, so it is safe to inspect private or unreleased streams.
Is the M3U8 viewer free?
Is the M3U8 viewer free?
Yes. It is free to use with no sign-up and no limit on how many playlists you inspect. It works on desktop and mobile browsers.
How large a playlist can it open?
How large a playlist can it open?
You can open files up to 20 MB, which covers very long VOD playlists with tens of thousands of segments. Large segment lists load in pages of 100 rows so the page stays fast.
