- Cornerstone & Building Dates: Year-only mode (MMXXVI) for monuments

Why this is different
Most converters just output numbers. This tool handles what others miss: Modern (IV), Clock face (IIII for 4 only), and Additive (IIII, VIIII) notation, proper handling of year 2000 short year as N (nulla), support for years 1–9999 with correct M-repetition beyond 3999, and 8 copy formats including bullet, dot, dash, slash, filename-safe, and custom separators.
No upload, no account, 100% client-side. Your dates never leave your browser.
How it works
1. Enter your date
Pick any date from AD 1 to 9999 using the date picker or set it to Today. The tool validates the calendar and blocks year zero, which Romans never had.
2. Choose order and layout
Select the component order: DMY (European XX • VI • MMXX), MDY (US VI • XX • MMXX), YMD (ISO MMXX • VI • XX), or single components like Y, M, D, MY, DM. Then choose Inline for one line, Stacked for vertical plaques, or Spaced to add separators between lines.
3. Pick numeral style and year format
- Modern: Standard subtractive notation — 4=IV, 9=IX, 40=XL, 900=CM
- Clock: Uses IIII for the exact number 4, like Roman clock faces, otherwise modern. Day 4 becomes IIII but 14 stays XIV
- Additive: Ancient form with no subtraction — 4=IIII, 9=VIIII, 40=XXXX
Choose Full year (2026=MMXXVI) or Short year (2026=XXVI). Short year for 2000 shows N (nulla), the medieval symbol for zero.
4. Style your plaque
Apply a material: Classic Stone, Brass/Gold gradient, Marble, Slate Ink, Parchment, Minimal, or Ornate with corner ornaments. Adjust typography (Serif Trajan, Modern Sans, Mono, Engraved Cinzel, Blackletter) and letter-spacing from 0 to 0.4em for perfect engraving.
5. Copy and export
The live preview updates instantly. Copy any variant — bullet •, dot ., dash -, slash /, stacked newlines, filename-safe — or download the plaque as SVG for laser engravers and CNC, or as 2× PNG for presentations.
All conversion runs locally using pure mapping tables. M=1000, CM=900, D=500, CD=400, C=100, XC=90, L=50, XL=40, X=10, IX=9, V=5, IV=4, I=1 for modern mode.

Frequently asked questions
How do you convert a date to Roman numerals?
How do you convert a date to Roman numerals?
Split the date into day, month, and year numbers. Convert each number separately using Roman symbols: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000. For example, 20 June 2020 becomes day 20=XX, month 6=VI, year 2020=MMXX, then join with your separator: XX • VI • MMXX.
What is the difference between Modern, Clock, and Additive styles?
What is the difference between Modern, Clock, and Additive styles?
Modern uses subtractive notation: IV for 4, IX for 9, XL for 40. Clock uses IIII only for the exact number 4 (like Roman clock faces) and modern for everything else, so 4=IIII but 9=IX and 14=XIV. Additive is the ancient style with no subtraction: 4=IIII, 9=VIIII, 40=XXXX, 900=DCCCC.
Why does my plaque show IIII instead of IV for 4?
Why does my plaque show IIII instead of IV for 4?
That is the clock face tradition. Roman clocks traditionally show IIII for 4 for visual symmetry with VIII on the opposite side. Select Clock mode if you want that historic look for birthdays or wedding days that fall on the 4th, or choose Modern for the standard IV.
What does N mean when I use short year?
What does N mean when I use short year?
Short year shows only the last two digits. For years like 2000, 1900, or 2010 where the remainder is 00, there is no Roman zero. The tool shows N for nulla, the medieval Latin word for nothing, which scribes used to mark zero. Switch to Full year to get MM, MCM, etc.
What year range is supported?
What year range is supported?
AD 1 to 9999. Roman numerals have no year zero. Years above 3999 are supported by repeating M beyond three times (e.g., 5000=MMMMM), which is the common modern extension for engraving.
