How it works

The Typing Speed Test operates using standardized industry formulas for calculating typing speed and accuracy. The system tracks your keystrokes in real-time as you type the randomly generated text on the screen.

The WPM Formula

A standard "word" in typing speed metrics is uniformly defined as exactly 5 characters (including spaces). This prevents the test from being skewed if you happen to get a sequence of very long or very short words.

The Accuracy Formula

Your accuracy is determined by comparing your correct keystrokes against the total number of keystrokes you made during the test: Accuracy (%)=(Correct KeystrokesTotal Keystrokes)×100\text{Accuracy (\%)} = \left( \frac{\text{Correct Keystrokes}}{\text{Total Keystrokes}} \right) \times 100

How to Use the Tool

  1. Select a Duration: Choose whether you want to take a 15-second sprint, a standard 30-second test, or a full 60-second endurance run.
  2. Start Typing: Click into the text area or simply begin typing. The timer will start automatically upon your first keystroke.
  3. Type the Highlighted Words: Type the sequence of words exactly as they appear. The current letter you need to type will be indicated.
  4. Review Your Stats: Once the timer hits zero, the test will end and immediately display your final WPM, Accuracy, total correct characters, and total errors.
  5. Restart and Retry: Click "Test Again" to generate a fresh set of words and attempt to beat your high score.

What is considered a good typing speed?

Why is a "word" considered 5 characters?

In typing tests, measuring actual words can be wildly inconsistent because words vary drastically in length (e.g., "a" vs. "encyclopedia"). To standardize the metric across different texts and languages, the industry standard defines one word as exactly five keystrokes, including spaces and punctuation.

Does this test penalize for errors?

Yes, this test calculates Net WPM. Only correct keystrokes contribute to your final WPM score. If you type a character incorrectly, it will lower your accuracy percentage and will not be counted toward your correct keystrokes, meaning your final WPM will be lower if you make frequent mistakes.

Can I backspace and correct my mistakes?

Yes! If you realize you have made a mistake in the current word, you can use the backspace key to delete and retype the characters. If you have already pressed the spacebar to move on to the next word, however, you cannot go back and correct previous words.

How can I improve my typing speed?

The most effective way to improve is by practicing touch typing—typing without looking at the keyboard. Focus on accuracy first rather than speed; muscle memory will naturally make you faster over time.
